Overview

As trust in business and government declines, leading companies know that having a strong, stable Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program isn’t just the right thing to do – executed well, it can also translate into financial and reputational advantage.

Fasken was one of the first Canadian-based law firms to develop a CSR practice. While we always worked on issues involving Indigenous relations, environmental standards, human rights, regulatory approvals and supply chain management, we realized that a holistic approach would improve the both the speed of our clients transactions and their stakeholders’ satisfaction with the long-term impact.

Our services include working with leaders to develop CSR programing, to conduct risk assessments including independent audits and investigations and to create policies and corresponding training programs among employees and suppliers.

In a crisis, we’ll help you to develop a quick, accurate response that engenders trust and transparency and preserves reputational capital.  If disputes arise, we’ll represent your interests in front of international tribunals or in court.

We advise sponsors and governments on large scale resource development projects in emerging markets, including matters related to community linkages programs, resettlement, empowerment, indigenous issues and community development.

We also develop and execute global government and institutional relations strategies for companies to manage their relationships with domestic and international governments.

Our clients include companies operating locally and internationally, including multinationals. The geographic diversity of our own firm – 10 offices on four continents – and those of our clients has taught us to take a nuanced and regional approach to CSR issues, but to also keep global expectations such as the U.N. Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights in mind.

Fasken is recognized for leadership in CSR law, earning recognition from respected publications such as Chambers Global and Lexpert. One of our partners is an elected member of the Corporate Social Responsibility Committee of the International Bar Association, and we enjoy sharing expertise in panel discussions on current trends and future issues in CSR law for many industry-specific associations.
