Bill Bies’ general corporate tax practice is concentrated on domestic and international M&A, as well as corporate finance and reorganizations. Advising clients on cross-border and international tax, Bill assists non-residents to enter the Canadian market and provides advice to Canadian companies wishing to operate abroad. Bill is also involved in personal tax and estate planning. A considerable portion of Bill’s practice involves dispute resolution with the Canada Revenue Agency and in the Courts.
Bill has acted for numerous high-profile corporations. With clients that include E. I. du Pont, ESPN, DeBeers Canada, Credit Suisse, The Bank of Nova Scotia, Colgate-Palmolive, MDS Inc., Rogers Communications Inc., Dofasco, Canadian Pacific Railway, and Walt Disney, Bill provides crucial advice on the rules governing taxation in Canada. Previously acting as the vice-chair of the firm’s Toronto Business Law practice group, he has also held the position of director of the Tax practice group.
Regularly providing clients with pivotal, tax-efficient guidance, Bill is a highly sought-after practitioner in the areas of corporate income tax and international tax. He was a professor at Laval University in Quebec City for two years and was an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto’s Law School for more than 20 years. He is a frequent speaker at conferences and seminars, presenting on topics ranging from international transfer pricing, interest deductibility and financing costs, to the tax treatment of hybrid instruments.
