Benjamin Surmachynski is currently attending the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law.
Before law school, Benjamin obtained a Bachelor of Social Sciences in Political Science and History from the University of Ottawa. Benjamin is passionate about the advancement of reconciliation, especially through the common law’s intersections with aboriginal law and indigenous legal traditions. He also takes interest in the application of communications law. At law school Benjamin serves as Co-President of the Indigenous Law Student Governance (ILSG). As part of ILSG Benjamin has represented ILSG among the student body, has sat on the University of Ottawa, Common Law Reconciliation and Decolonization Committee and has participated as a stakeholder in a variety of faculty meetings. He helps organize and run the September 30th annual orange t-shirt sale in which all funds are donated to a select indigenous charity. Benjamin is also the Co-President and a Founder of the Obiter Society. The Obiter society has helped build community amongst University of Ottawa law students through a variety of social events. They organized a clothing and donation drive to the Ottawa mission, and the Arguendo cup, the first uOttawa law student organized moot for first year law students. Benjamin has intervened at the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission with a Professor led research team. Conducting research and drafting both interventions and replies. Benjamin speaks both English and French.
In his spare time Benjamin likes golf, reading and spending time with family and friends.
