Betty Laidlaw is a Law Clerk in the firm’s Toronto Private Client Services Group and Trusts, Wills, Estates and Charities Group and has worked in the legal profession for 35 years.
Betty has extensive experience assisting executors and trustees in managing complex, high-value estates and trusts. Betty focuses on the administration of estates and trusts, estate accounting and estate litigation. Assisting in all aspects of estates work, Betty’s primary responsibilities include providing support to the lawyers in the practice group and the day-to-day administration and management of estates and trusts, including gathering in assets, winding up of estates and trusts and distributing assets to beneficiaries.
Betty is responsible for the preparation of all probate related documentation, the preparation of estate and trust accounts and the preparation of court documents for passing of accounts, both contested and uncontested. Her experience also includes providing day-to-day support to individuals acting on behalf of incompetent persons either as attorneys under continuing powers of attorney or guardians pursuant to court orders.
Betty has received a Certificate in Estate and Trust Administration from STEP Canada which denotes excellence in the industry. With this Certificate, Betty has received professional recognition in estate and trust management. She can confidently manage estate and trust accounts of various sizes and has an adept-level understanding of estate and trust management, trustee duties and powers, and estate and trust taxation.
Betty actively participates in the ongoing mentorship of junior clerks within the department.
