Summer students join us prior to their final year of law school. Our program bridges your studies and your legal career and it’s tailored to your individual interests, whether you want to focus on one practice area, industry or several.
Articling
Orientation
Fasken’s student orientation program will give you the right tools to succeed, right from the start. You’ll be introduced to firm contacts and other students, trained to use our IT and knowledge management systems and have an opportunity to ask plenty of questions.
Rotations
The Ottawa office does not follow a formal rotation program. You will, however, have direct exposure to and develop skills in the primary practice areas of this office: commercial litigation, labour and employment law, broadcasting, telecommunications, competition law, international trade, corporate and commercial law and political law.
Bar Admission
Articling students in Ottawa are required to complete the Law Society of Ontario Lawyer Licensing Process (LLP). You’ll be paid two weeks salary and given time to concentrate on your studies during each week of the process.
Mentoring, Training & Evaluation
Each student is assigned a principal and a mentor who will provide guidance and ensure the quality of your experience. Your principal is responsible for your professional development. Your mentor will be a junior lawyer who can give you confidential feedback, coaching and encouragement in areas of interest or concern. You will also receive support from our professional development staff and student committees.
You’ll receive evaluations and feedback throughout the articling program and a formal evaluation at the end of each rotation. We know that feedback goes both ways; students are welcome to raise questions, concerns or comments at any time.
Throughout the year, you’ll participate in firm-wide training seminars focused specifically on students, professional development sessions for lawyers, practice group meetings and regional events focused on clients and community activities. Students are encouraged to participate in the training programs offered by our Toronto office as well as those in the Ottawa office.
Compensation
Fasken compensates students at rates comparable to other national law firms. Your LLP and articling enrolment fees will be covered by the firm and your will receive your regular salary during the bar admission course.
Articling students receive dental, medical and extended health care benefits as well as a fitness subsidy.
