Summer Law Student Program

Fasken's summer student program offers you:

An Experience Developed Just for You

Your summer experience at Fasken will be designed just for you. As part of our collaborative approach, we consult with each student prior to his or her arrival at the firm to discuss the student's goals and objectives. Each student is provided with a program specifically tailored to match his or her expectations and interests - there is no rotation and you will not be allocated to a specific group. Summer students have the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of areas of their choosing or to focus on a specific area of interest.

Respecting the diversity and interests of our summer students, no two students will follow the same program throughout the summer. As a summer student at Fasken, you have the ability to direct your own career, with the assistance and guidance of our experienced Professional Development Team, our Student Development Committee, and firm mentors.

The Opportunity to Participate in an External Secondment

Our summer student secondment program was introduced in 2001. As part of the Summer Program, each student is encouraged to participate in an external secondment giving them not only the "Bay Street" experience but also another window into the practice of law. Our secondments offer the opportunity to experience the practice of law from one of a number of perspectives: that of a client, a government agency, or an NGO. Secondments are usually 4 weeks in duration and are planned for the end of the summer term. We will work with you to find a secondment opportunity that fits with your interests and goals for the summer. If you express an interest in a law-related secondment other than those traditionally offered, we will work with you to secure it. Below is a small sampling of more recent summer secondments:

  • Canadian Olympic Committee
  • Compass Group Canada Ltd.
  • CPA Canada
  • Electra Battery Materials Corporation
  • Enwave Energy Corporation
  • Fairstone Bank of Canada and its affiliates
  • Fasken Offices: Vancouver, Montreal, and London, UK
  • Hillcore Group
  • IAMGOLD Corporation
  • Kensington Capital Partners Limited
  • Manulife Financial
  • Noetic Fund
  • Ontario Human Rights Commission
  • Ontario Securities Commission
  • PC Financial
  • Pro Bono Ontario
  • Stryker
  • TD Bank Group
  • The Co-operators Group Limited
  • The Kraft Heinz Company
  • Toronto International Film Festival
  • University Health Network

Read what some of our summer students have said about their secondments:

The lawyers I worked with really went above and beyond to make sure I had opportunities to learn and be involved in meaningful ways. I appreciated the trust they placed in me and how active a role I was encouraged to take.

I really appreciated working with the in-house counsel and getting exposure to different tasks from the client's perspective. The client ensured I was getting good mentorship and meaningful work experience.

I really enjoyed my secondment. The team made an effort to integrate me into their work, and gave me assignments that were useful to the organization. I most enjoyed connecting with others on the team and learning to present legal research in a new way (i.e. where non-legal departments were the target audience).

If you would like to speak to one of our students to learn more about their secondment experience, please reach out to Ashleigh Rogers (arogers@fasken.com).

Challenging Work

Our Toronto summer student program provides a stimulating and challenging learning experience prior to your final year of law school. You will have plenty of opportunities and a lot to do in just a few short months. Our students work on some of the most noteworthy deals and cases in Canada.

As a Fasken student, you will have the opportunity to work with some of the best lawyers around and to make meaningful contributions to matters that shape the Canadian business and legal landscapes.

Unparalleled Training and Mentoring

We are committed to our students. We want you to succeed, develop new skills and grow with our firm. We are not just looking to hire students, but also individuals who will become our associates and partners.

In addition to challenging work, we believe that the key to reaching your potential as a lawyer is excellent training and mentoring in a supportive environment. Everyone at Fasken - students, associates, partners and staff - recognize the importance of training and mentoring in your development. It is part of our culture.

While all members of the firm are available to assist in the supervision and training of our students, as a summer student you will be assigned three supervisors ranging in seniority and based on your chosen area(s) of interest. Your supervisors are directly responsible for providing guidance and ensuring the quality of your summer experience. One supervisor, usually a member of the Student Development Committee, will be your Designated Supervisor and will be responsible for providing you with formal feedback on a regular basis. This feedback is in addition to the informal feedback and support you will receive from our lawyers in the course of your work, and the comments solicited from your secondment experience.

An Introduction to the Business of Practicing Law

Your time at law school will provide you with an excellent foundation in the academic aspects of the law. At Fasken we build on that training and help you develop the additional skills required in the practice of law as a business.

Through our secondment opportunities and our Client Service Initiative we expose our summer students to the business side of the practice of law from day one. Our students have meaningful interactions with clients to expose them to the client service aspect of the practice law.

Fasken is pleased to invite first-year law students to apply for the following internships:

Our Labour, Employment & Human Rights Law internship entails both file work and special projects with various members of Fasken’s leading Labour, Employment & Human Rights Group. Our Litigation intern would have exposure to files and work similar to that of a second-year summer student. The Legal Practice Innovation internship is an exciting opportunity for someone who is interested in the ways practice innovation, including artificial intelligence, is driving changes in law.

The internships will run from May 5, 2025 through August 8, 2025 in our Toronto office and are paid positions.

Articling Student Program

Historically we fill our articling complement through our summer law student program and, as such, do not participate in the articling interview process.

Our articling program follows the same philosophy as our Summer Student Program. We work to ensure that your articling term closely resembles the experience you will receive as an associate with our firm. Having a full-service practice, we offer you a flexible rotation system designed to give you practical experience in our major practice areas, while ensuring you retain the freedom to customize your articles to suit your particular interests. Prior to commencing your articles, we will work with you to plan your rotation schedule, which if you wish, may be adapted during your articling term as your interests evolve.

Articling Students will have two mentors. Your mentors will provide guidance and ensure the quality of your experience. They are responsible for your professional development. You all also receive support from our Professional Development team and Student Development Committee.

Our Student Development Committee and firm mentors also provide ongoing feedback to our students throughout their articling term. This feedback assists our students in developing the necessary skills to become excellent lawyers. Recognizing that feedback goes both ways; students are also encouraged to raise questions, concerns or comments at any time.

Throughout the year, students may participate in firm-wide student training seminars, professional development programs for lawyers, practice group meetings, regional and client events and community activities.
