Émilie Barreca joined the Corporate/Commercial group at the Montréal office early on in her career. She practises primarily in the areas of emerging technologies and start-ups.
In particular, Émilie assists our clients with private equity and venture capital financing as well as mergers and acquisitions (M&A). She also has experience in negotiating technology-related commercial agreements and in privacy law in transactional and commercial matters.
Prior to joining Fasken, Émilie gained experience in communications, marketing and business development, as well as in securities law. She was head of the “Fonds d’investissement étudiant” legal team at the Université de Sherbrooke, where she was able to perfect her knowledge of securities valuation and responsible investment, such as by overseeing the implementation of the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment.
Driven by her curiosity for the financial sector and innovation, and by her values founded in ethics and sustainability, Émilie is currently pursuing her interests in emerging legal issues. This includes issues such as compliance with privacy regulations, for example by supporting businesses in their transition following the coming into force of An Act to modernize legislative provisions as regards the protection of personal information (Law 25), FinTech and cryptocurrency regulation, and artificial intelligence (AI) oversight.
