Law of Government Relations (Lobbying) – Professional Implications for Corporate Counsel

As of April 2016, all ten provinces have enacted or announced a plan to introduce lobbying registration laws. In Ontario, several municipalities have created or are considering lobbyist registries. The federal law is now 27 years old, but the federal Lobbyists’ Code of Conduct is brand new.
Corporate counsel are affected in several ways. They are directly affected when they communicate with government officials. Also, strict liability for corporate CEOs is obviously of concern to every general counsel.
The session will explore the professional and practice management implications, for in-house counsel, of new developments in federal, provincial and municipal regulation of government relations. Topics to be examined include:- Lobbying and the Rules of Professional Conduct
- Strict liability for corporate CEOs and the role of corporate counsel
- Professional implications of contracting with consultant lobbyists
