There’s a lot of buzz about 5G - but what is it and why should we care? This panel of four experts will take on this issue. First, Paul Burbank will explain what 5G is and where Canada stands in its preparation for a 5G network rollout. Stephen Whitehead will describe some of the possible services that 5G will generate and what it will mean for consumers and businesses. Leslie Milton will then discuss some of the regulatory hurdles presented by 5G and what is being done in Canada and abroad to address them. Finally, Andrew House will consider some of the security issues posed by this new technology. The panel will be chaired by Laurence Dunbar.

10:35 - 11:05 am Are you ready for government procurement?

Speaker: Marcia Mills

Procurements by public entities will be a competitive procurement and will be subject to the rules surrounding the public procurement process. Now that the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) is in effect, provincial/territorial and MASH sector entities are also subject to trade agreement rules.

Even if your company is a subcontractor, many of the terms and conditions that will apply to your prime contractor, including security requirements and supply chain integrity assessments, will be flowed down to you (and can also apply to your IT infrastructure partners).

Knowing how to approach a public procurement and how to best position your company to review and respond to the requirements, including preparation for the requisite security clearances, supply chain integrity assessments and other standard requirements, will be critical to success in this area.

11:10 - 11:50 am Insights on Trade Relations - Canada/U.S.

Speaker: James Villeneuve

Trade and business relations between Canada and the United States is a topic on everyone’s mind – where are relations presently and what does the future hold. James Villeneuve, now a Senior Strategic Business Advisor with Fasken, has had a unique vantage point on these issues. In November 2018, James completed four and a half years as Canada’s Consul General to Los Angeles serving as Canada’s senior representative in Southern California, Arizona and Nevada. James will provide his insights on Canada/U.S. relations, his recent experiences with the USMCA negotiations and his thoughts on the path forward for the two countries.
