Come and join us as we examine the much anticipated final Report issued by the Honourable Eileen Gillese, Commissioner of the Inquiry into the Safety and Security of Residents in the Long-Term Care Homes System. The day will begin with a panel of legal and industry experts discussing the potential impact that the Report’s recommendations will have on the seniors' housing industry. The panelists will offer insight into lessons learned from the Inquiry and will consider ways in which the industry will evolve.

After the panel, Fasken lawyers will present on various issues impacting the daily operations of long-term care and retirement homes. The afternoon will feature multiple sessions, please select the afternoon sessions that you will be attending when you register for this event.

  The Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation (CABHI), located at Baycrest Centre, focuses on accelerating the development, validation, commercialization, dissemination and adoption of promising innovations in the aging and brain health sector. Successfully implementing and adopting innovation can be as hard if not harder than developing the innovation itself. Join CABHI leaders, Bianca Stern, Executive Director, Health Innovations and Mel Barsky, Director, Business Development as they talk about both the practical realities and the emerging opportunities of implementing innovation into your community.

1. Staffing Woes – This session will examine the staffing challenges faced by the industry and examine ways to attract and retain top talent.  It will also examine issues around agency use.

2. Accommodating Addiction - This session will examine recent case law and discuss the current state of the law on accommodating health care professionals with addiction.

3. Progressive Discipline and Performance Reviews - How can you effectively manage poor performers in a Unionized context?  What can you (and should you) agree to as part of a settlement?  This session will seek to provide employers with solutions for effectively managing their workplace.

1. Interpreting the LTC Regulations  - It has been almost ten months since the amendments to Regulation 79/10 came into effect.  This session will examine what those amendments were and what the impact has been.

2. No Vacancy – This session will examine the obligation for Retirement Homes to accommodate residents with disabilities and the balancing act required to ensure compliance with both the Retirement Homes Act and the Human Rights Code.

3. Interpreting OHSA - This session will examine what is required from employers in the Seniors’ Housing Industry in order to comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Specifically, it will touch on the challenges in providing a safe work environment when dealing with residents with responsive behaviours.
