5G wireless communications presents many sectors of the economy with tremendous opportunity to heighten efficiency, reduce costs and improve worker safety - none more so than resource development industries. Some of the most promising applications of 5G technology include the ability to collect, process and efficiently transfer large data volume of data for analytics; ultra-reliable low-latency connections that will enable Artificial Intelligence solutions and equipment automation; real-time monitoring of remote locations and facilities for environmental, safety, and security reasons. Other revolutionary use cases will develop with increasing frequency in the coming years.

Despite this great opportunity, challenges remain in deploying the wireless infrastructure that will fuel 5G evolution in the resource industry, especially given the high investment costs in remote areas. Regulatory uncertainty may exacerbate these challenges, both internationally and in Canada. This panel will canvass the many opportunities and challenges associated with emerging 5G technology in resource industries.
