This session will explore water as a shared resource and address issues arising from its increased scarcity. With social and environmental dimensions of water having a significant impact on all stages of the mine life cycle – whether closing and rehabilitation of mines, the development of new projects or the expansion of existing ones, the mitigation of water related ESG risks is critical for the mining industry and the environments within which it operates.
The panel will, among others, discuss the following aspects:
- Increased scrutiny of water management plans
- Community water needs and engagement with communities to manage water as a shared resource
- Stricter regulatory regimes governing water access
- Management of mine waste and effluent
