There is increasing evidence that legal professionals are at higher risk of experiencing mental health and substance use issues as compared to either the general population or even other stressful professions. All legal professionals, including those practicing within public sector and in-house settings are at elevated risk of experiencing these issues.
In this session we will explore:
- The scope of mental health and substance use issues in the legal profession
- Some of the reasons why legal professionals appear to be at elevated risk of experiencing these issues
- What Law Societies in Canada are doing as regulators to try to address these issues
- Things that we can all do to better address these issues as a profession, as employers, and as individuals
This session will be presented by Brook Greenberg, QC. Brook is a partner in the Commercial Litigation Group in the Vancouver office of Fasken. He is an elected Bencher of the Law Society of British Columbia, and has been the Chair of the Law Society’s Mental Health Task Force since its establishment in 2018.
