The path to net-zero for mining companies requires comprehensive plans to decarbonize and electrify operations. Hydrogen power is poised to play a critical role in this clean energy transition. But the path forward with hydrogen remains uncertain. The slow development of hydrogen technologies and new applications; the high cost and still limited supply of ‘green’ hydrogen and the lack of established supply chains for fuel delivery and storage all represent significant challenges.
This session will provide an overview of the state of decarbonizing mining operations as well as the current and future state-of-play for hydrogen power in getting mines of carbon-intensive equipment and processes. Special focus will be given to the potential for hydrogen in Canadian mining operations, and the opportunity new hydrogen power development presents for collaboration with remote and northern First Nation communities trying also to “get off dirty diesel”. This program will be moderated by Dan Brock, co-lead of the Fasken Hydrogen Energy Advisory Team.
