The early void in the regulation of international business, within economic globalization, initially gave way to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) followed by the passage of consensus-driven guidelines, such as the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGP: 2011).

Today, as we emerge from the socio-economic fallout from COVID -19, we are witnessing a multi-faceted and concerted effort to transform “soft law“ guidelines into “hard law” requirements pertaining to the human rights footprint of corporations. Certain sectors of the global economy – the extractive and garment industries to name two – are under particularly close scrutiny.

Together, in this session, we will examine the various measures taken by national governments, the leading pronouncements by the Courts and initiatives by civil society that are propelling the reform of the social dimension of economic globalization – a body of activity in search of a sustainable world order.
