Heather Whiteside maintains a broad corporate practice with a focus on privacy and health law.
As a member of Fasken’s Privacy and Cybersecurity practice group, Heather provides private and public-sector organizations with advice on compliance with federal and provincial privacy laws. She helps clients develop privacy policies and procedures, respond effectively to freedom of information requests, and negotiate contracts relating to personal information, such as data processing and data licensing agreements. She also provides privacy advice with respect various transactional matters, including corporate restructurings and share and asset purchase transactions. Heather has extensive experience in health privacy matters involving personal health information, such as the development of digital health technologies and data sharing frameworks for healthcare providers and researchers.
As a member of Fasken’s Health Law practice group, Heather provides regulatory advice relating to the provision of healthcare services and the regulation of healthcare providers and facilities. Heather enjoys working collaboratively with clients in the healthcare space, including hospitals, health teams and group practices, medical device manufacturers and distributors, health tech start-ups, and health-related charities. She assists with governance matters, corporate structuring, and outsourcing arrangements.
Heather is an IAPP Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/C). She holds an LLM from Georgetown University, where she was awarded the Thomas Bradbury Chetwood, S.J. Prize for achieving the highest academic average in the National & Global Health Law program, and a BCL/JD from McGill University, where she served as the Editor-in-Chief of the McGill Journal of Law and Health. Prior to law school, Heather obtained an Honours Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science.
Heather summered and articled at Fasken and was previously seconded to The Hospital for Sick Children.
