Isabelle Kalar is an associate in Fasken’s Intellectual Property (IP) and Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT) group at our Montréal office. She advises and represents clients in a full range of matters in copyright, trademark, media and defamation law. She also helps companies by providing strategic IP and technology advice in the mergers and acquisitions context. Isabelle also provides strategic legal counsel that addresses the unique challenges and opportunities faced by clients in the plastics industry.
Isabelle holds a Bachelor’s degree in civil law (LL.B.), a Juris Doctor (J.D.) and a Master’s in comparative law (LL.M.) from the Université de Montréal. As such, she counsels clients with respect to IP issues in both Québec civil law and Canadian common law and performs a wide variety of tasks, ranging from drafting contractual agreements in intellectual property to managing litigation.
Moreover, Isabelle has extensive experience in intellectual property development strategy and protection in a cross-border context, namely in trademark prosecution and litigation and brand portfolio development. She assists companies of all sizes in protecting their trademarks by providing strategic advice on intellectual property asset management.
Isabelle also represents some of the major media firms in Canada in matters concerning freedom of the press and freedom of speech.
During her studies, Isabelle was involved in a number of ways in the Faculty of Law. She was the coordinator of the mentorship program, providing students with academic support and guidance. She was also part of the Faculty’s Comité des arts, where she set in motion a Université de Montréal cohort to compete in the Harold G. Fox Intellectual Property Moot. While at the Faculty of Law, Isabelle also drafted the case study and organized a mock trial in technology law.
