Toronto (Canada) – Fasken Martineau, a leading international business law and litigation firm, announced today that it has taken an active role in two of Lexpert’s Top 10 Deals of the Year.
Fasken Martineau advised on the following deals in 2016:
- Fortis’ acquisition of ITC Holdings. Fortis owns 10 utility operations in 17 locations in Canada, the United States and the Caribbean. It is now among the top 15 North American regulated investor-owned utilities ranked by enterprise value. The ITC acquisition is the largest in the history of Fortis, dramatically increasing our North American footprint. It establishes significant scale and a new platform in the electric transmission sector. Fasken Martineau acted as counsel to a financial lender with a team including John Torrey, Dave Ferris, Dev Singh, Tom Peters, Jason McMurtrie, Dave Johnson and Noel Chow.
- Alimentation Couche-Tard’s bid for CST Brands, an agreement to purchase gas-station chain for nearly US$4 billion, in order to expand into Texas and eastern Canada. As a significant component of financing the deal, Parkland Fuel Corporation entered into an agreement with Aliment Couche-Tard to acquire majority of CST Brands, Inc.’s Canadian business and assets for approximately C$965 million. Parkland was advised by a team from Fasken Martineau that included Chris Wolfenberg, Michel Boislard and Marie-Josée Neveu.
About the list
Lexpert’s Top 10 deals of the year list, published annually since January 2004, is unique and distinct from league tables prepared by accountants, investment banks and financial analysts, and ranked for the most part by size of the transaction. This list is based on an extensive canvass conducted in October and November 2016 by Editor-in-Chief Jean Cumming of Canadian M&A, securities and corporate finance lawyers.
