Overview

Toronto (Canada) Fasken has been recognized in the 20th edition of the GCR 100 for the eighth consecutive year. The guide, published by Global Competition Review, has provided a listing of the world’s top competition practices for two decades and features firms in more than 50 jurisdictions for 2020.

Since 2013, Fasken has been one of the few firms to be recommended in the annual rankings for Canada and South Africa, highlighting the successes of the Firm’s Antitrust/Competition & Marketing (ACM) group.

The 2020 guide ranks Fasken in the “Recommended” category in the Canadian jurisdiction for the eighth consecutive year, noting the addition of key team members since 2018 including Senior Business Advisor, John Pecman, Counsel, Chris Margison, and the return of partner Leslie Milton; in addition to the leadership of partners Huy Do and Antonio Di Domenico who head the practice. Further, the guide features the group’s involvement in Canada’s aviation consolidation trend including advising Air Transat on its sale to Air Canada, advising Air Canada on the group purchase of Aimia’s Aeroplan Loyalty Business, and Di Domenico acting as counsel to the Competition Bureau in its abuse of dominance application against the Vancouver Airport Authority. The Firm also advised BASF as the divestiture buyer of Bayer’s global seed and non-selective herbicide businesses and is defending Yamashita Rubber against a class action.

The guide also ranks Fasken in the Recommended” category in the South African jurisdiction for the fifth consecutive year, highlighting the leadership of Neil MacKenzie since 2018, and the work of partners Johan Coetzee and Hanneke Spies. The guide also features the group’s involvement with several confidential merger control and behavioural matters, as well as acting for Alstom in its attempted merger with Siemens, representing Nomura International in the Forex cartel probe and advising the South African Property Owners Association in the grocery retail market inquiry.

The Fasken ACM group assists and guides clients through antitrust/competition merger clearance and foreign investment reviews for Canadian and international M&A transactions. Clients include leaders in the agricultural, food, consumer electronics, automotive, mining, energy, telecommunications, transportation, pharmaceutical, financial services, manufacturing and retail sectors.
