Toronto (Canada) - Fasken Partners Antoine Aylwin, Jonathan Lim and Vera Toppings have been named the 2020 Lexpert Rising Stars: Leading Lawyers Under 40 winners. This award recognizes and honours their contributions to the Firm, legal profession and larger community.
Each year, Lexpert celebrates Canada’s leading lawyers, in this demographic, who are rising stars of the legal community. This year, as no gala was held due to COVID-19, the Rising Star winners were announced in the Lexpert Special Edition: Energy & Rising Stars.
Antoine has developed a diversified practice in the areas of estate and trust litigation, access to information related to documents held by public bodies, protection of personal information in the public and private sectors, cybersecurity, public and administrative law, disciplinary law, and extraordinary remedies. He often acts as breach coach to companies that have experienced a security incident. As a former President of the Young Bar Association of Montréal, Antoine sits on different committees in the legal community. He served as Vice-President of the Québec Bar for two years and a board member for five years. Antoine has previously chaired the Ethics and Governance Committee, Finance & Audit Committee, and Human Resources Committee as well as served as President of the Strategic initiative in IT Advisory Committee. He was recently appointed to the Canadian Legal Information’s Board of Directors, a non-profit organization created and funded by the Federation of Law Societies of Canada. Additionally, he joined the Board of Directors of Lexum, an innovating software company that designs and operates online legal information delivery products.
Jonathan is a leading litigation lawyer with an excellent track record in various practice areas including insurance litigation, product liability, and transportation law. He sits on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Bar Insurance Association (CBIA) as the representative of the British Columbia Canadian Bar Association branch. The CBIA, is a not-for-profit corporation which arranges for the provision of insurance and financial products to serve the financial needs of the legal community, their families, and employees. Jonathan is also an assistant coach for the Richmond Jets Minor Hockey Association where he volunteers his time organizing and conducting practices and coaching his two sons and their teammates.
Vera is a highly experienced litigator focused on complex commercial litigation. She has particular expertise in defending class actions and regularly advocates for clients in multi-stakeholder complex settlements. She has been a Vice-Chair of the Canadian Bar Association’s Competition Litigation Committee for two years, is a national Member of the Advocates’ Society Class Actions Practice Group, and was previously Vice-Chair of the Competition Law Section Young Lawyers’ Committee and Secretary of the Ontario Bar Association’s Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Section. Vera is one of the founders of Osgoode Hall Law School’s Mediation Clinic and intensive clinical program, which was one of the first ADR clinical programs in Canada and has been an adjunct professor for the “Lawyer As Negotiator” course at the law school for a number of years. She has been a part of Fasken’s Paralympic Committee, helping to implement the Firm’s commitment to Canadian Paralympic athletes. As part of her pro bono work, Vera has represented students navigating the education system through Pro Bono Ontario’s education law programs.
