Overview

Johannesburg (South Africa) – We celebrate the unwavering commitment and dedication of our lawyers and the pro bono community who continue to render access to justice for the most vulnerable members of our society.

As an international law firm we are committed to ensuring that our lawyers use their legal skills  to improve access to justice. Through our provision of pro bono legal services we strive to create a more socially conscientious society that not only promotes the rule of law but hopefully also creates opportunities for the economic growth of our country; by advancing the rights of our entrepreneurs so that they are able to meaningfully participate in our economy.

We are able to further entrench our pro bono culture through our partnership with ProBono.Org, which is a non-governmental organisation operating as a legal clearing house. Through this partnership our lawyers, staff, and legal helpdesks are able to render pro bono legal services to those members of our society who would otherwise be denied access to justice.

Our ongoing pro bono commitment was recently recognised at the 2020/2021 ProBono.Org Awards. This serves as a reminder to us of our pro bono commitment and the great need for access to justice in our country.

Fasken received awards for:

  • Staffing a Legal Clinic for SMME’s that provided pro bono legal services to SMME’s and facilitated webinars for SMME’s during the Covid-19 lockdown period;
  • The most pro bono hours undertaken by a large law firm in 2021;
  • A special mention for “availing themselves for clients who were unfairly evicted, by bringing an urgent application on a Friday, having it heard on the Saturday, and executing the order which was in client’s favour.”

Guest speaker, Janine Myburgh, and Chairperson of the Legal Practice Council, commended Fasken and other pro bono awardees for the phenomenal impact of their pro bono work on the legal profession.

Pro Bono practice group head at Fasken Johannesburg Sushila Dhever shares that “We are proud of our lawyers, who especially during the hard lockdown remained committed to rendering pro bono legal services to those most in need; by acting as trusted legal advisors, by finding innovative ways to render pro bono legal assistance, and by going the extra mile at a time of such uncertainty when our country and our people were most distressed. We are also delighted to partner with Pro Bono.Org and like minded NGO’s who share our value of servicing the communities around us. By working together we hope to achieve a most just society”
