Ontario businessman wins libel trial against the Toronto Star - $1.5 million award one of largest in Ontario history.
On February 5, 2007, after more than three weeks of trial, a jury in Northern Ontario found that The Toronto Star had libelled Fasken Martineau clients Peter Grant and his company Grant Forest Products Inc.
The jury of six Haileybury area residents awarded $400,000 in general damages to Peter Grant and $50,000 to his company. The jury also awarded Grant $1 million in punitive damages and $25,000 in aggravated damages. This $1.475 million award is one of the largest in Ontario history.
Fasken Martineau represented the winning plaintiffs at trial, with a team led by Peter Downard and including Catherine Wiley and student-at-law Dawn Robertson.
