9:00 am - 9:40 am: Avoiding Pitfalls when Structuring your Not-for-Profit Corporation and Compliance Risks in Lobbying

Not-for-Profit corporations have their own rules. This presentation will identify key corporate issues for consideration when incorporating a federal not-for-profit corporation and highlight the legal obligations imposed on directors, employees, officers and volunteers of not-for-profit entities who interact with government officials. It will address commonly overlooked compliance risks in the areas of lobbying, conflicts of interest, gift-giving and hospitality and how to structure the corporation in a compliant manner.

9:40 am - 10:20 am: Coming Soon to a TV near You: Future Programming Distribution Models

On September 22, 2017, the federal Cabinet issued an Order in Council requesting that the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (the Commission) report before June 1, 2018 on future programming distribution models. The federal Cabinet noted that programming is increasingly being made available through online and mobile platforms and that Canadian distributors will have to adapt to the new environment. The Commission responded to that request by holding a public proceeding and invited all stakeholders and members of the public to comment on the issues raised in the Order in Council.

This presentation will summarize the Commission’s report, which will be issued prior to June 1. The report is expected to provide an analysis of how distribution models for programming will evolve and indicate from whom Canadians will access programming. It will also address the extent to which these models will ensure a vibrant domestic market that is capable of supporting the continued creation, production and distribution of Canadian programming, in both official languages, including original entertainment and information programming.

10:35 am - 11:35 am Human Rights, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace : Why It’s Important and What You Should Know

Ensuring the protection of human rights, equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace is not simply grounded in legal requirements, it is a wise business practice.

In this one-hour presentation, we will touch upon the various facets of these topics in the workplace, and in the legal workplace in particular. This will include what it means to protect human rights, equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace, why it is important, who should care about these protections and to whom they apply. We will provide tools and strategies, including best practices, on how and when you should address matters such as discrimination and harassment, as well as specific commentary on the Rules of Professional Conduct and the recent Continuing Professional Development requirements for lawyers.

This program contains 1 Equality and Inclusion Professionalism Hour
