The Corruption of Foreign Public Officials Act, designed to give effect to Canada's commitments under the OECD Convention on Combating Bribery in International Business Transactions, which came into force on February 14, 1999.  G8 Summit leaders have since then acknowledged that raising global standards of transparency in the extractive sector would reduce the risk of corruption. The Canadian government has thus begun to develop a mandatory reporting regime for extractive companies. The Extractive Sector Transparency Measures Act came into force on June 1, 2015. Following a phased implementation period, payments made to Aboriginal recipients after June 1, 2017 must now be reported. This session will present the applicable legal framework for corruption and payment transparency.
