On December 3, 2020, the federal government tabled Bill C-15. Bill C-15 is the federal government’s response to calls to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as a framework for reconciliation in Canada. This legislation is based on Bill C‐262 (a non-government bill proposed by the NDP’s Romeo Saganash), that was rejected in the last session of Parliament by the Senate. It is unclear whether Canada will learn lessons from BC’s communications and implementation of similar new legislation on the same topic: Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA).
Our session will dive into the legislation as well as the government’s communications on its meaning. We will hear from local experts on its meaning from a legal perspective, the mining industry response, from Latin American experts regarding their experience in implementation of FPIC.
