Overview

Under the new federal Pay Equity Act, employers are required to prepare pay equity plans that identify and correct systemic discrimination in the compensation paid to predominantly female job classes. For large employers and those with unions, these plans must be jointly prepared in a pay equity committee. In this three hour “deep dive” we go beyond the basic requirements of the Pay Equity Act to unpack the most significant issues that employers are facing in their compliance journeys, including:

  • Considerations when forming and running pay equity committees, including employee communications, the election process, terms of reference and confidentiality
  • Legal, procedural and labour relations considerations when applying for multiple pay equity plans
  • Understanding and applying the exclusions from compensation contemplated by the Act
  • Pay equity methodology, including opportunities for alternate comparison methodologies
  • Lessons learned from the Quebec and Ontario experiences with proactive pay equity legislation
