Overview

Client

Meridian Credit Union Limited

The Applicant filed an application with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario ("HRTO") alleging that Meridian Credit Union Limited ("Meridian"), Desjardins Financial Security Life Assurance Company and Collabria Financial Services Inc. had discriminated against him with respect to goods and services on the basis of age. Specifically, the Applicant argued the travel insurance provided with his Meridian credit card included discriminatory terms.

There was a preliminary hearing in which the Respondents, including Meridian, argued that the Application should be dismissed or Meridian should be removed as a Respondent. The HRTO agreed with the Respondents and dismissed the application on the basis that the credit card fell under the exception for insurance contracts in the Ontario Human Rights Code.

Marc Rodrigue and Andrew Gould represented Meridian Credit Union Limited on behalf of Fasken.
