On December 17, 2021, FortisBC Energy Inc., the largest gas distribution utility in the province, applied to the British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC) for approval of a revised Renewable Natural Gas Program.
FortisBC was the first public utility in North America to offer biomethane service directly to customers. During this proceeding, the BCUC conducted a comprehensive review of the program and considered FortisBC’s proposed changes.
In its Decision, the BCUC approved a new service, whereby a blend of renewable natural gas will be sold to all of FortisBC’s sales customers. The BCUC also approved FortisBC’s differential pricing proposals for its voluntary renewable natural gas service. The BCUC, however, rejected a proposal to serve all new residential connections with 100 percent renewable natural gas.
Chris Bystrom (Energy), Tariq Ahmed (Energy), and Niall Rand (Energy) acted as lead counsel for FortisBC providing full regulatory support.
