Overview

New technology, increasing competition and new opportunities to carry on business across Canada are transforming the credit union system.

Fasken is a leader in the credit union sector. We advise credit unions on their most significant matters, including M&A, regulatory issues, strategies for carrying on business across Canada, and leveraging technology to effectively compete.

We understand the dynamics and unique issues facing cooperative institutions. We combine this with deep expertise in the business and regulation of banks to provide credit unions with strategic and practical advice on how to adapt to changing business and regulatory environments.

We are on the front line in advising on products and services currently offered and adapting them to initiatives such as mobile wallets and mobile payments. We also have a strong presence in the credit card space as we provide advice to many of the largest credit card issuers in Canada. We have expertise on loyalty programs, co-brand credit and debit card programs, prepaid cards, stored value cards and consumer disclosure related to these products.

We have a retail banking team composed of experts in consumer cost of borrowing disclosure, AML, credit reporting, privacy, anti-spam, advertising and electronic commerce – all focused on retail banking products and consumer-facing legal issues.

We have a national practice, with dedicated lawyers in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec, with extensive experience dealing with regulators across the country.
