Employers across the federal sector continue to adapt their businesses and workplaces in response to dramatic changes in legislative reforms and decisions from courts and tribunals. In 2020, these dramatic changes have taken place against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, which presents additional challenges for federal employers.

In this "2020, The Year in Review: The Federal Sector",  we will recap the most significant and recently proposed legal changes to the federal employment and labour landscape and provide our insights on how federal employers can best adjust their policies and practices to ensure legal compliance.

Specific topics include:

  • The new regulatory framework to address workplace harassment and violence
  • The new Pay Equity Act and how to prepare for the long and winding road ahead
  • Implications of the new Accessible Canada Act
  • The new rules governing unpaid interns
  • The new processes for adjudicating complaints and disputes under the Canada Labour Code
  • Changes to the rules governing group terminations
  • The implications of the recent Supreme Court of Canada decision on the duty to inspect locations that an employer does not control
  • Significant decisions from the Courts, the Canada Industrial Relations Board and Arbitrators
  • Collective bargaining trends in the federal sector
