London (UK) - Fasken Martineau, a leading international business law and litigation firm, announced today that it advised Drapers' Academy and its sponsors, the Drapers' Company and Queen Mary University of London, on the acquisition of a nearby junior school and on the conversion of Drapers' Academy into a Multi-Academy Trust.
Fasken Martineau helped the Academy and its sponsors in their acquisition of Brookside Junior School, at the request of the UK's Department for Education (DfE). The transaction entailed converting the existing Drapers' Academy, a private company limited by guarantee, into a Multi-Academy Trust. The Trust has entered into two new funding agreements with the DfE and has agreed upon a lease, commercial transfer agreement and shared facilities agreement in respect of the junior school with the local authority.
"A further important element was the restructuring of the Trust and schools governance. This marks the largest pro bono transaction in which the firm's London office has been involved. We are proud to have advised the Drapers' Multi-Academy Trust while meeting every deadline and providing concise yet comprehensive legal advice," said Steven Beharrell, lead lawyer.
Located in Havering, Drapers' Academy is a large co-educational school for pupils aged 11 to 19 years old. It is sponsored by the Drapers' Company (one of London's Twelve Great Livery Companies) and Queen Mary University of London, based in East London.
The Fasken Martineau team was led by Steven Beharrell (Mergers & Acquisitions), who has been a Governor of Drapers' Academy since its inception. He was supported by Nadeem Khan, Kinjal Kondhia (Real Estate) and Felix Ndi-Obiosa (Corporate/Commercial).
