Overview

The hospitality and leisure sector relies on a multi-disciplinary team.

We view every hospitality and leisure project as a complete business. Our advice intersects all areas of ownership, investment and operations. This includes structuring and putting in place agreements for ownership, management, and operations. It also includes licensing, IP and IT considerations where marketing and other programs rely on secure third party systems and strict privacy regulations.

Fasken regularly represents owners, managers, and operators of hospitality and leisure projects. In addition, our team has represented clients in some of the biggest hospitality and leisure deals in Canada, involving major brands including Hyatt, Westin, Marriott, gaming operators and gaming-related projects, entertainment centres including the West Edmonton Mall, the development of Maple Leaf Square, and the athlete’s village for the 2016 Pan American games, and major shopping centres including the Outlet Collection at Niagara Shopping Centre and the Premium Outlet Collection at Edmonton International Airport. Many of these transactions involved foreign investors and global organizations, (thus triggering cross-border considerations) whose long-term interests were integral to deal structure.

Often the hospitality field is very labour intensive and requires seasoned investors and trusted partners to provide hands-on day-to-day management. Our cross-disciplinary team of experts offers a wide ranging suite of solutions to coordinate leading real estate, labour law and intellectual property advice.

The real estate team is nationally recognized for its expertise in complex transactions. Fasken is ranked as a leading group by respected publications such as Chambers Canada, Legal 500 and Best Lawyers.
