Overview

Tax disputes call for careful assessment of exposure and appropriate negotiation with authorities, regardless of the jurisdictions involved. Many lawyers in the Fasken team have held senior positions at tax authorities in Canada. We’ve also won some of the most important tax rulings on behalf of businesses, setting precedents that clarify technical interpretations and benefit entire industries.

We assist clients at all stages of tax disputes, from audit to administrative appeal to litigation.

If you’re faced with an audit relating to corporate income taxes, GST/VAT or transfer pricing, we’ll advise you and help manage the proper process. If necessary, we can challenge decisions in court, including through judicial review.

We can also facilitate voluntary disclosure, obtain advance tax rulings, clearances and comfort letters that enable our clients to move forward with their business.

Our clients include leaders in the mining, corporate finance, energy and investment fund industries as well as startups in high-tech and life sciences.
